Today the BBC reported that officials in Shanghai are trying to get rid of all the ‘Chinglish’ signs:
The authorities in the Chinese city of Shanghai are starting a campaign to try to spot and correct badly phrased English on signs in public places.
Chinglish, as the inaccurate use of the language is known, has long been a source of embarrassment for the authorities there.
It is also a source of amusement to foreign visitors.
But Shanghai wants to spruce up its image. It is expecting millions of visitors for the World Expo fair.
I think I have seen this before…
Oh yeah. A couple of years before the Olympics, I remember seeing a similar article in the BBC. I was in China at the time, and I remember furiously taking photos of all the Chinglish I saw. When I read the article, I was curious to see if they could successful fix the Chinglish signs, because to me, it seemed near impossible.
And guess what? They failed miserably. The Chinglish seemed as common in 2008 during the Olympics as it did in 2006.
Solution? Hire me and pay me lots of money. I’ll make sure you save face for the Expo
