Life: Food in Shanghai

by maltzajava on April 3, 2009

I have not written about one of my favorite topics (food) in a while, so I figured it was about time.

Since I live near a University, there are lots of different restaurants to try. My average meal is probably around 8RMB, and so far, I have been pretty happy with the selection.

Without a doubt, my two favorite foods in Shanghai are Xiao Long Bao and Guo Tie.

Xiao Long Bao...YUMMY

There is a famous xiao long bao place near the Yuyuan Garden. The line is ually really long, but it is totally worth it. I shoudl warn first time xiaolongbao-ers, the bao is filled with liquied, which can be very hot. Some places will give you a straw to drink it, but if not, do not try to jam the whole thing in your mouth…you’ll get burned.

Next, we have guo tie (), which is a fried dumpling.

There are actually several names for dumplings in Chinese, which change depending on the way the dumplings are served. If you are interested in this, you can click the link above the photo.

In addition to these two favorites, I also find myself enjoying Gong Bao Ji Ding a lot (Kung Pow Chicken). I think it is probably the closest thing to a dish you would find at a Chinese resto in the States. It is my default, and I usually order it when I (a) cannot decide or (b) cannot understand the rest of the menu!

The most common dish I have is some form of noodle.  I particularly like noodles from a little Lan Zhou resto near the University. They make a mean La Niu Rou Mian, and it costs about 6 Yuan. Yummy.

This post is making me hungry. Off to eat!

OMG, you make me homesick now!! I enjoy 兰州拉面 as well, but personally think the best part is to see how it is actually being made from a dough–it’s like a magic, isn’t it?
