I have added a few more books to the reading list (in addition to the DeFrancis book I mentioned a couple of days ago):
China
Luo, Y. (2007). Guanxi and Business.
I have not finished this yet, but I would be happy to comment on it once I have finished.
Xiaohui, J. (2007). Shanghai Finance.
Also not completely finished. I snagged this book to help me prepare a couple of lessons for my students before I go to Shanghai. I will be preparing a handbook, and teaching them some cultural/political/and economic facts about Shanghai. So far, so good.
Cambodia
Kiernan, B. (2002). The Pol Pot Regime: Race, Power, and Genocide in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, 1975-79.
Ung, L (2006). First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers.
I got these two books in Cambodia. I read Ung’s book when I was in Phnom Penh, which was not ideal after visiting the Killing Fields and S-21 Museum. If you are interested in a moving book about a girl trying to survive during the Pol Pot Regime, I would recommend this book.
Singapore
Oei, Anthony (1992). What If There Had Been No Lee Kwan Yew?
I was fooled by the title. I found Oei’s book at a local used bookshop, and I thought I would give it a shot (I think it was S$2). Anyway, I would not recommend it. I actually had trouble reading it because of the writing and ‘the angle’ (note: I am chosing my words wisely, and leaving out a lot of opinions about it and the press/media here…hint hint). If you want to learn about LKY, just read his book.
