On Sunday I attended the Denise Annual Wine Fiesta. The best part – I got to go for free. I never thought I would be able to drink good, expensive wine in Singapore for free. It was great.
The festival ran on Saturday and Sunday, and lasted from 12PM-9PM on both days. Due to scheduling issues, I was unable to make it until about 7PM on Sunday.
The festival was took over a couple of buildings, and included wines from all over the world. The wines were divided by region, and there was a nice map with a section for notes. We had enough time to make it arond to the different sections, but we were not trying too hard to drink all the wines and take notes – I don’t claim to know much about wine.
Actually, that is one of the funniest things about these events. There are people that know what they are doing, that think they know, and people like me – some are good, some are not, and some times I can clearly tell which one I like better. The thing is though, it does not matter. Every time a tried a wine, the person running the table would give me the analysis. I would take a sip, and they would say “see, isn’t that a smooth wine with an excellent aroma. It is dry, but not too dry, and it blends well with a fine meat and blah blah blha”. I love it.
We ended the tour in the French section. I managed to find some incredible wines (also very expensive), listen to some interesting stories, learn about the production, and be in the prime spot for closing. When they were trying to clean up for the night, they gave us all the open bottles to get out of there. At that point, there were about 6 of us (3 or 4 Brits, which is always entertaining), so we took a couple bottles down and continued the conversation. I met a few more people, but since it was Sunday night, I had to end my session a bit early.
I am definitely going to try and do that again – always great to attend a classy event.
